In a brave new world of multimedia journalism, the award-winning School of Visual Communication at Ohio University led by Brian Storm of MediaStorm.org and Zach Wise of digitalartwork.net dares to ask the question: What is the soul of the 200-year-old community of Athens, Ohio and the county that surrounds it?

Athens soul is restless. Its stories lie beneath the bricks, waiting to be exposed. Precariously balanced on the tip of cosmopolitan Appalachia, its uninhibited subcultures test the bounds of predictability.

Director: Casey Hayward and Keith Newman
Videographer: Casey Hayward

David Hostetler is surrounded by two of his passions: wood and rhythm. A world renowned fine art sculptor, famous for his wood and bronze interpretations of the female form, talks about why he lives in rural Appalachia, just outside of Athens, Ohio. Perhaps part of the answer lies in the small jazz club he's built in the back part of his art studio where he can unwind with his friends and favorite beats.

Soul of Athens: House of Square Roots

<itunes:author>Ohio University School of Visual Communication</itunes:author>

Producer: Chris Kelleher
Photography: Ross Mantle
Audio: Ross Mantle
Editing: Chris Kelleher
Music:

"Are You Teasing Me"
Performed by: Federal Creek Dance Band
Written by: Charlie and Ira Louvin

In sharp contrast to the pounding music at the bars on Court Street in Athens, there is a small house in Millfield, Ohio, where local residents gather every week to hear the sounds of Appalachia and enjoy some square dancing. Whether you are looking for bluegrass, country or a good square dance caller, the Russell Building is a great place to relax and get to know the locals.
